2008. Game on!
After a five week interval, the Sachems FC under-11 boys will pitch up for the first time on Friday, lacing up their futsal boots for a packed training session and a controlled intrasquad training match ahead of the weekend's opening matches.
The lads are sure to be marked men after 2007's league championships, and are already behind the proverbial ball having not played together since mid-November while their opponents have been on the pitch right along through December.
It will be up to the team's veterans to set the tone and demonstrate exceptional leadership this winter, with none more important than goalkeeper Griffin Burkey, who is poised to continue his All-World ways between the pipes. Burkey, a solid soccer goalkeeper but a truly exceptional futsal goalkeeper, is excited to lead his team in league, regional and national competitions this winter.
The vocal leadership will continue to come from maestro Philip Woolston, who was not only one of the team's top scorers but also a two-time league champion and the unquestioned leader of the squad. The other two-time league cup holders, Spencer Anton, Yoav Barkai, Charlie Cacciola and Patrick Foley, will be looked to lead by example -- demonstrating the mental and physical excellence that carried their teams to the top last term. Surely the crafty Barkai will frustrate opponents with his quick, shifty attacking as the punishing power of Foley will no doubt do the same. Anton, a strong man behind the curtain for the Sachems is expected to have a monster season after a tremendous outdoor campaign. Cacciola, the team's lockdown defender, is also an attacking stalwart primed for a high-scoring winter.
Charlie Booth, Eric Rolfs and Myles Walsh will deputize for Burkey in goal.
